About the Pledge® brand
First introduced in 1958, Pledge® is a legacy brand of all-purpose cleaners, polishes, and oils to help maintain your surfaces.
Launching a Flagship Brand
In 1958, a Product Committee was reviewing consumer testing results of a new SC Johnson product developed by chemist Erland Muoio: Pledge® furniture polish. They were searching for negative responses. They couldn’t find any.
In fact, test consumers pointed out that Pledge® could be used on numerous surfaces – wood, metal and plastic – and used as a dusting aid, too. This early success heralded the launch of the Pledge® brand more than 50 years ago.
Pledge® Furniture Flip helped give used furniture new life
Pledge® partnered with furniture flippers to find the beauty in things other people may have overlooked. Our partners renovated a piece of thrifted or second-hand furniture that needed some love and shared how they used Pledge® to help maintain their newly flipped furniture.

Designed to be gentle on surfaces and tough on messes, our pH-balanced products gently clean 101+ surfaces. Unlike many all-purpose cleaners, Pledge® multisurface cleaners have a pH close to neutral to ensure no damage or dullness to your surfaces.
The Pledge® Legacy
Pledge® was developed in the SC Johnson Research Tower, a state-of-the-art laboratory complex designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. While there were other dusting aids as well as waxes and polishes on the market, Pledge® combined the two, promising “waxed beauty instantly as you dust.”
